Mashaba Tours Sets Out Its Heritage Month Soweto Itineraries

September is when heritage sits at the centre of the South African calendar, and Johannesburg operator Mashaba Tours has used the month to explain exactly how its township itineraries are put together. Because Heritage Day lands on 24 September and holiday travel bunches up around it, the company is steering visitors towards the particular route choices it already offers instead of a generic day out.

There is a practical reason for spelling this out. Soweto cannot be treated as one attraction behind one gate. It is a sprawling township on Johannesburg’s south western edge, and its museums, memorials, streets and eating places sit apart from one another across a wide area. How much a visitor actually takes in comes down to the hours they can spare and whether they want the Apartheid Museum or the inner city folded into the same day. Mashaba Tours keeps a clear set of itineraries mapped to those combinations, and September is when the questions about which to choose peak.

The half day option and where it fits

At the shorter end sits the half day township tour. It operates every day apart from New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Christmas Day, with departures at 9:00 and 13:00 so travellers can take either a morning or an afternoon slot depending on the rest of their schedule. The route gives visitors a feel for everyday life in Soweto and the community that holds the area together, while taking in landmark sites such as the Hector Pieterson Museum and Mandela House…
