Sunrisers Eastern Cape v Pretoria Capitals
St Georges Park

St George's Park Cricket Ground (commonly known as St George's Park, Crusaders Ground or simply Crusaders) is a cricket ground in Gqeberha, (formerly known as Port Elizabeth), in South Africa. It is the home of the Port Elizabeth Cricket Club, one of the oldest cricket clubs in South Africa, the Eastern Province Club and Sunrisers Eastern Cape. It is also one of the venues at which Test matches and One Day Internationals are played in South Africa. It is older than Kingswood College in Grahamstown. The ground is notable for its brass band that plays during major matches, adding a unique flavour to its atmosphere. The ground hosted its first Test match in March 1889 when England defeated South Africa by 8 wickets. This was South Africa’s first Test match. As of 2005, there have been 21 Test matches played at the ground of which South Africa has won 8 and their opponents 9 with 4 draws. The first One Day International played at the ground was in December 1992 when South Africa beat India by 6 wickets. It also hosted five games in the Cricket World Cup in 2003. Sunrisers Eastern Cape

The opening match of Betway SA20 Season 5 triggers a massive blockbusting narrative as the defending champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, square off against the Pretoria Capitals. Scheduled for Sunday, 17 January 2027, at 15:30 SAST, the fixture is a high-octane rematch of the dramatic Season 4 final where the Sunrisers clinched the title.

The scene will be set at the iconic St George’s Park in Gqeberha, universally celebrated as the most soulful, vibrant venue in South African cricket. Known for its carnival-like atmosphere, the stadium will be completely packed out by the “Orange Army”. Fans can expect the signature St George’s brass band playing in the stands, local DJs on the decks, active kiss-cams, and an electric summer buzz as day turns to night under the floodlights.

This opener promises a heavy-weight tactical duel between two star-studded squads rebuilt during the October 2026 player auction:

  • Sunrisers’ Local Backbone vs Capitals’ Fireworks: The Sunrisers Eastern Cape lean heavily on their explosive local Proteas heroes like Tristan Stubbs, the precise power of Quinton de Kock, and the lethal left-arm pace of Marco Jansen.
  • The Capitals’ Global Impact: The Pretoria Capitals counter with elite international firepower, featuring the massive T20 pedigree of Andre Russell, alongside local sensation Dewald Brevis and Proteas test captain Temba Bavuma.
